Last month, for the first time since the pandemic, the Smith School was thrilled to be able to host an in-person WOMEN (Women's Outreach in Materials, Energy, and Nanobiotechnology) event! The WOMEN outreach program provides a unique and exciting opportunity for 10th grade girls to learn about science and engineering careers. An overview article written by Smith School Adjunct Associate Professor Detlef Smiglies on polymer characterization with x-ray scattering made the front cover of the Journal of Polymer Science (Wiley). Many MEng and undergraduate students were instrumental in making the research happen. Read more

The key to making geothermal competitive with other renewables, is “going into regions where nature hasn’t been so generous, and figuring out a way to engineer the system,” says Cornell University professor Jefferson Tester. He is chief scientist for a pilot project at Cornell that aims to directly heat the 30,000-person campus with geothermal resources by 2035. Read more
