We are engaged in fundamental theoretical and experimental studies that relate the macroscopic transport behaviors of suspensions, porous media, and composite materials to the basic physical interactions between individual particles. The theoretical studies combine ideas such as the method of multiple scales and ensemble averaging, borrowed from kinetic theory, with traditional fluid mechanics. The experiments which involve direct visualization of the behavior of particles and bubbles in suspension are aided by high-speed photography and index-of-refraction matching to make a suspension transparent.
